Harriman Program Committee
Imagine boarding a train in New York City and an hour later you’re hiking, boating, and swimming at your own woodland retreat. All this, and fun programs with fellow outdoor enthusiasts, are offered at 30-plus events each year brought to you by the Harriman Program Committee.
Working with the Chapter’s activity and program leaders, the Harriman Program Committee (HPC) schedules a full season of fun and educational programs from May to October at The Stephen & Betsy Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center. CHOC is a 26-acre camp on Breakneck Pond in Harriman State Park, only 35 miles from New York City, with high-end cabins and camping.
Join us for activities at the Harriman Outdoor Center
All HPC programs are led by dedicated and qualified AMC volunteers. Most are 3 days/2 nights overnight programs with a meal plan. There are also a number of events that you can attend for one day. Overnight programs typically offer a choice of camping or staying in a shared cabin. Most accommodations utilize the shared modern bathhouses, but some cabins have bathrooms.
Every HPC event has a special theme with related activities that are appropriate for novices and intermediate outdoor enthusiasts. Participants have a choice of joining all, some, or none of the planned activities. We hope you’ll want to participate, but you’re welcome to come even if you prefer to do your own thing. Some popular programs include Wilderness Skills, Wilderness First Aid, Novice Backpacking, Lakeside Yoga, Yoga & Kayaking, Ladies’ Canoe & Kayak, Young Members Camping, Fall Hiking & Fine Dining, New Members, and Family events.
Register for events at Harriman Outdoor Center
Registration is simple. Just go to AMC’s Activities Database, click Register Now, choose a ticket type, and pay with a credit card. Many popular events sell out quickly, so register early! Some programs are targeted as specific audiences, although everyone is welcome to register for most events. Online registration is required. AMC members receive a 20% discount. It’s easy to participate in HPC Programs, even if you are a beginner and have no vehicle: CHOC is accessible by public transportation, and the camp provides shuttle service to and from the train station.
So, grab your hiking boots and swimsuit, and come join us!
Volunteer for the Harriman Program Committee
We need your help! Planning 30 events for the May to October season is a lot of work. If you would like to volunteer as an Activity Leader or as part of the Committee, contact the Harriman Program Committee at harriman@amc-ny.org.
