When is the Annual Picnic?
The New York-North Jersey Chapter’s Annual Picnic for 2022 begins Friday, June 10 at 3 p.m. and ends Sunday, June 12 at 11 a.m. It will be held at the Stephen & Corman AMC Harriman Center (CHOC) in Harriman State Park, about 35 miles north of New York City.
Can I stay over?
Yes, attendees are encouraged to make a weekend of it. You can choose between roughing it on a tent platform or shelter or book a bunk in one of the cabins. Accommodations for the picnic can be reserved for Friday and Saturday nights. Members get a nice discount. The rates are:
- Camping: $55 Member / $80 Non-member (include all Sat activities + Picnic + Sat lodging on tent platform or shelter + Sun breakfast)
- Cabin: $125 Member / $150 Non-member (incl all Sat activities + Picnic + Sat lodging in cabin + Sun breakfast). Register here.
Can we just come for the day?
Yes, guests are welcome to just come for the Annual Picnic on Saturday, June 11. The day kicks off at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 for adult members, $40 for adult non-members, and $10 for children under 12. The admission price includes the barbecue at the picnic. Register here.
What activities are planned?
The itinerary so far includes a campfire Friday night, yoga on the dock, birdwatching, a hike to the fire tower, paddling instruction, a discussion about bears, a tour of Baker Camp, a trail maintenance demonstration, a picnic, and more. Please note that you should bring binoculars if you want to go birdwatching.
How do I get there?
You can drive and park on site (carpooling is encouraged). Or you can take a Metro-North train to Sloatsburg, where shuttles are available to transport people to CHOC. If you are coming for just the picnic on Saturday, please note that you should take the train that arrives in Sloatsburg at 10:24 a.m. and should plan to take the 6:50 p.m. train from Sloatsburg back to New York City. Please note that reservations for the shuttle must be made in advance and that the shuttle costs $11 per person one way. For more info and to reserve a shuttle, please email email@example.com.
What should I bring?
Sheets, pillowcase or sleeping bag, tent, towels, yoga/hiking/swimming/paddling gear, sunscreen, bug spray, headlamp, hat, water bottle, and personal toiletries. Sheets and towels may be rented from the camp on a first come, first serve basis. Bring your tent if you have one. There are loaner tents and sleeping pads until they run out. BYO adult beverages and snacks to share. Also, your ukelele or any other musical instrument you wish to play.
All that hiking and paddling is going to make me hungry. What’s on the menu?
Friday night dinner and Saturday morning breakfast are $40 that you can pay with your reservation. The Picnic on Saturday is included with the cost of the ticket. Vegetarian options will be available. The Picnic will be followed by a bonfire Saturday evening. You also have the option to purchase trail lunches in advance for Saturday and Sunday for $15 per person.
How likely is it that I’ll win the raffle?
Your chances of scoring some AMC swag are pretty high. Last year, a husband and wife both won prizes.
