Cold, Wet, & Alive; 21 minutes; 1989. Produced by the ACA. Hypothermia is the topic as we follow a group of 5 friends in one kayak and two canoes spending a spring day on a whitewater river. A series of small mistakes add up to near disaster.

Drill Time! Solo Playboating II, 50 minutes; 1996. Bob Foote, Wayne Dickert, and Kent Ford show us how to improve our OC-1 whitewater paddling. Teaches carving and how carving concepts can be used to paddle in an effective straight line. Good pointers on surfing. Free Fall; Canoeing Chile, by Mike Yee; 25 minutes; 1993. Bob Foote, Mike Yee, and 3 other solo open canoers paddle the Lower Rio Bio Bio (at the Pangue Dam site, now under water), Del Rio Claro (7 Teacups section), Rio Maichin, and Rio Fuy. CL 5+ whitewater with several 30’ waterfalls.

Grace Under Pressure: Kayak Rolling, 46 minutes and Roll Up, 16 minutes (both on one video tape). Instructional videos on kayak rolling.

Heads Up! River Rescue for River Runners; 29 minutes; 1993. Produced by the ACA. A wide variety of safety and rescue techniques are shown not only in re-enactments but also in real, hair-raising, life-threatening situations.

Introduction to Canoeing; 35 minutes; 1991. Everything beginning tandem canoers need to know from transporting their boat to peel-outs and eddy turns.

Kayaker’s Edge, The, 58 minutes; 1992. Expert kayak instruction by Kent Ford, & many others. All the strokes and maneuvers are explained and demonstrated very well, but the footage on rolling is outstanding.

Open Canoe Roll, The, 18 minutes. Bob Foote discusses and demonstrates components of open canoe roll. He also demonstrates it on a huge wave in the Grand Canyon.

Retendo: The Art of Precision Playboating. A kayak instructional guide to dynamic surfing, sidesurfing and 360’s, elevated spins, retentive moves in holes, and linking cartwheels. Hosted by Kent Ford, featuring Scott Shipley.

Rock Climbing: The Art of Leading; 48 minutes, 1988. Spectacular climbing sequences. Not much here for boaters, but remember that rivers are in canyons and gorges, and we may have to climb out in an emergency.

Solo Canoe, by Rick Taylor, 93 minutes. Discussion of solo open canoe strokes. Demonstrated by a left-sided paddler.

Solo Canoeing: Whitewater Bound. A Flatwater Lesson with Tom Foster on Whitewater Technique; 115 minutes; 1992. Produced and hosted by Tom Foster former head of the National Instruction Committee (NIC) of the ACA. Tom gives an extremely analytical discussion and demonstration of every whitewater canoe stroke and maneuver. His is the first and clearest explanation and demonstration of "paddling on the inside of the circle," and how to use this technique to paddle an effective straight line.

Solo Playboating, 39 minutes, 1991. Kent Ford gives lots of helpful pointers for improving your OC-1 whitewater boating. He is especially good on the forward stroke and on surfing. Compare his set-up for rolling to Bob Foote’s.

Whitewater Self Defense. Directed towards kayakers and helps them avoid trouble and deal with everday problems. Major contributors are Charlie Walbridge and Kent Ford.

Accepting the Challenge: A Guide to Safe Paddling. 26 minutes. This video by the National Livery Safety System addresses the issues of boater responsibility, including: pre-trip preparation, personal safety, equipment use, courtesy, stewardship, and legal obligations.
