The AMC Chapters do not sponsor trips lasting longer than ten days, or that require traveling long distances. These trips are considered Major Excursions, which are defined as trips of more than ten days or over 500 miles from any AMC chapter. These major trips are approved and sponsored by the Club Major Excursions Committee. Several Chapter leaders serve on the Major Excursion Committee, and many very experienced NY-NoJ Chapter leaders lead Major Excursions.
In general, Major Excursions are open to AMC members and to nonmembers, and many trips do not require outdoor skills. However, the primary purpose of some Major Excursions is an outdoor or wilderness activity that may require participants to be very skillful in the activity. Excursions that have skill requirements may include, hiking, backpacking, skiing, bicycling, canoeing & kayaking, mountaineering, or others. Leaders may require that participants have AMC experience in that activity or AMC references.
The Club's International Committee also sponsors major Educational Excursions to many remote and exciting places. Rarely do these Educational Excursions require outdoor skills. NY-NoJ Chapter leaders also conduct these trips.
In addition to Major Excursions, the Club also supports Interchapter Excursions, which are usually less than one week long and often within driving distance. They are "Interchapter" because interest in them transcends the sponsoring chapter's area. Several NY-NoJ Chapter activity committees sponsor Interchapter Excursions each year.
In the next few months there are some really GREAT Club Excursions that are being organized by many outstanding leaders. A full listing of all Club Excursions is published in every issue of AMC Outdoors, the Club's almost-monthly magazine. But, you have to be a AMC member to get the magazine so that you will know all about these fantastic trips. See our online Membership Application to join the AMC.
